About Breast Augmentation

Implant-based breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic procedure performed on young women in the world. (1) This surgery enhances a patient’s breast size and shape by safely placing a saline or silicone gel implant behind the breast tissue. Surgeons typically conduct breast implantation in a hospital setting under general anesthesia. They strategically place incisions underneath the breast in the inframammary fold to reduce visible scarring.

After choosing to undergo breast augmentation, the first step in the process is picking your ideal implant. This is a choice that should be considered on an individual basis.

Some questions to ask yourself before your consultation revolve around:

  • Desired Look: Are you looking for nicely rounded breasts or more of a natural look?
  • Existing Breast Tissue: Do you have enough tissue to cover certain styles of implants?
  • Nipple Position: Has the position of your nipples shifted downward after breastfeeding?
  • Breast Sagging: Do you lack natural lift and experience ptosis or sagging breasts?

Implant Sizes & Shapes

Many women have a sense of what to expect after breast augmentation surgery. It is common for patients to describe the desired size in cup sizes, even though cup sizes are not typically an accurate way to measure implant size. There are alternative techniques to show your surgeon your ideal breast shape.

Referencing photographs of all shapes and sizes is a smart way to become comfortable with your options. It is important to express your preferences about the balance between the breasts and hips, how close together or far apart the breasts are, and straight or convex profiles. This helps Dr. Racanelli plan your procedure and lead you toward the right type of implant.

Breast Implant Options

Saline Implants

Saline implants are filled with a completely harmless sterilized salt water solution. Saline breast implants also require a smaller incision than silicone implants, and they are a good choice when it comes to correcting size discrepancies. Once properly placed, they provide a very life-like look and feel. (2)

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants look and feel more natural than saline implants do. Properly placed, they can be very soft to the touch and often virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. There have also been new developments in silicone technology which has been proven to nearly eliminate risk. Contact our office today to learn more. (2)

What Are Gummy Bear Implants?

At Dr. Racanelli’s practice, we prioritize the safety and well-being of our patients. Gummy bear implants represent a state-of-the-art advancement in silicone breast implant technology, offering a high level of safety and structural integrity. The key features of these implants are:

  • Cohesive Gel Composition: Gummy bear implants are characterized by a cohesive gel composition. This unique gel remains stable within the implant’s shell, minimizing the risk of leakage into the surrounding tissues in the event of a rupture.
  • Enhanced Safety Profile: Unlike earlier generations of silicone breast implants made from a liquid gel, gummy bear implants provide an enhanced safety profile. The cohesive nature of the gel ensures that it maintains its form even in the rare occurrence of an implant rupture.
  • Shape Retention: The term “gummy bear” aptly describes the implant’s ability to maintain its shape. This feature contributes to a more natural appearance and feel.

This innovation in silicone breast implant technology underscores our commitment to offering our patients the latest advancements for a safe and satisfying aesthetic experience. For personalized consultations and to explore whether gummy bear implants align with your aesthetic goals, please schedule an appointment with Dr. Racanelli today.

Recovery & Results

Modern breast augmentation surgery no longer requires the need for an extended recovery period. The key to rapid recovery is the quick return to activity, specifically early range of motion. Within 24 to 48 hours, many women can return to their daily lives, short of strenuous exercises, and do not need pain medication. Within around 1 week, you can return to work and add strenuous exercises several weeks later. Those with sedentary jobs typically return to work 3 to 4 days after breast augmentation.

After your surgery, you will likely experience swelling and bruising for several weeks. As this dissipates, your breast shape settles into its final contour, a process that can take 6 to 12 months to complete. The final results are long-lasting and look natural.

Breast Augmentation vs. Breast Lift

Breast Augmentation

“Oftentimes, patients will present to my office requesting a breast augmentation when in reality they need a breast lift. A breast augmentation will only make your breasts bigger as they are and do nothing for the position of your nipple. Many times if you have ptosis or droop to your breasts, you may also require breast lift, so it is important to ascertain what your goals are. If you are just looking for a lifted perkier look, then you may be able to achieve this look with a lift alone. If you are looking for larger breasts and need your nipple position adjusted, you may require a lift as well.

Although many plastic surgeons will perform a breast lift and an augmentation at the same time, I will not. I stage these procedures as I believe fundamentally they work against one another. During a breast augmentation, I make one small incision in the inframammary fold just below the breast. Through this incision, you can accomplish the entire breast augmentation procedure. With a breast lift, however, there are many incisions I must place on your breast. Oftentimes, there is an incision around your areola, one that goes down the front of your breast, and one that goes within your inframammary fold.

The way to get a bad scar from plastic surgery is to place a lot of tension across the scar. In a breast lift, there is an inherent amount of tension designed in the procedure which actually lifts the breast. If you add an implant to the procedure at the same time, you will essentially be doubling the tension across those incisions leading to suboptimal scarring. I believe it is important to stage these procedures as this ultimately will provide the best outcome.”

FAQ

Who is a good candidate for breast augmentation?

The ideal candidate for breast augmentation is in good health with realistic expectations. They may seek this surgery to increase the size of their breast, or to correct certain asymmetries or imperfections.

How do most people pay for breast implants?

At the practice of Dr. Racanelli, we understand that each patient has unique financial considerations. To facilitate a seamless and accessible payment process, we offer diverse payment options to suit your preferences.
We accept a variety of payment methods, including credit and debit cards, and cashiers’ checks, and provide the convenience of financing options through reputable companies such as Care Credit. To secure your chosen day of surgery, a deposit is requested at the time of booking. This deposit ensures the reservation of our surgical facilities and resources exclusively for your procedure. The remaining balance for your surgery is not due until one month before the scheduled operation. This timeline is designed to provide flexibility and accommodate your financial planning.

Do breast implants cost more by size?

No. The pricing is not based on the size of the implant you choose.

What does a teardrop implant look like?

A teardrop implant is characterized by a shape where the majority of fullness is concentrated in the bottom portion to create a natural, tapered appearance. Dr. Racanelli does not utilize teardrop implants due to their potential to move and/or flip upside down within the body.

How does the shape of the upper pole of the breasts affect their appearance?

Some women like a very natural look where from the profile, the pole of the breast is very straight. Some prefer a convex or bulging look. Measurements like the circumference of the chest wall, and the physical characteristics of the breast tissue play a big role in your options. For example, a woman in her 20s who has never had children will generally have tighter tissues, thus less room to put an implant. On the other hand, middle-aged women who have had several children regularly generally have looser tissues which allows for more implant options.
