Thinking of Getting Breast Augmentation? If you’re wondering whether breast augmentation is right for you, our website is a great place to start educating yourself. Breast augmentation is performed for many reasons; to enhance your figure; even out asymmetrical breasts; reshape breasts after nursing; and reconstruct breast tissue after mastectomy. With today’s advancements surgeons are able to produce beautiful natural looking breasts that suit your body shape and frame. More than ever women are embracing the opportunity to have the silhouette they’ve always wanted without ‘looking’ enhanced.

Before and After Photos

Breast augmentation surgery involves the placement of an implant behind the breast tissue and beneath the chest muscle by your surgeon. The implant is filled with either saline or silicone gel, and the procedure is typically conducted in a hospital setting under general anesthesia. It generally takes 1 to 3 hours to complete. Incisions are strategically made underneath the breast in the inframammary fold. Recovery is often swift, with many women resuming work and daily activities within just one week.

Breast Augmentation vs Breast Lift

“Often times, patients will present to my office requesting a breast augmentation when reality they need a breast lift. A breast augmentation will only make your breasts bigger as they are; a breast augmentation will do nothing for the position of your nipple. Many times if you have ptosis or droop to your breasts you may also require breast lift, so it’s important to ascertain what your goals are. If you’re just looking for a lifted perkier look than you maybe able to achieve this look with a lift alone. If you looking for larger breasts, and need your nipple position adjusted you may require a lift as well.

There are many plastic surgeons that will perform a breast lift and an augmentation at the same time, I will not. I stage these procedures as I believe fundamentally they work against one another. During a breast augmentation a small incision is made in the inframammary fold, just below the breast. Through this incision you can accomplish the entire breast augmentation procedure. With a breast lift, however, there are many incisions that need to be placed on your breast. Often times, there’s an incision placed around your areola, one that goes down the front of your breast, and one that goes within your inframammary fold.

The way to get a bad scar from plastic surgery is to place a lot of tension across the scar. In a breast lift there’s an inherent amount of tension designed in the procedure which actually lifts the breast. If you add an implant to the procedure at the same time you’ll essentially be doubling the tension across those incisions, and you can get sub-optimal scarring. I believe it is important to stage these procedures, and ultimately this will provide the best outcome.”

What implant is right for you? This is a choice that should be considered on an individual basis. During your consultation we’ll discuss all the options available and tailor to your specific needs. As the leading doctor for New Jersey breast implant surgery, Dr. Racanelli has the experience to help you choose what’s right for you.ings You Should Think About

  • Your Desired Look: Are you looking for nicely rounded breasts or more of a natural look?
  • Your Pre-existing Breast Tissue: Do you have enough tissue to cover certain styles of implants?
  • Your Nipple Position: Has the position of your nipples shifted downward after breast-feeding or Do you lack natural ptosis or droopiness to your breasts?

Choosing which implant is right for you can be a difficult decision and should be one that’s made in a consultation with you and your surgeon.

Size & Shape Options

Many women have a sense of what they like to look like after breast augmentation surgery. It’s common for patients to describe the desired size in cup sizes, although cup sizes are not actually a very accurate way to measure implant size. Even bra manufactures don’t agree on standard cup sizes.

There are alternative techniques to provide your surgeon with the direction you’d like to go. Referencing photographs of all shapes and sizes is a smart way to become comfortable with your options. Providing your surgeon with information about other characteristics is also a good idea. For example, the balance between the breasts and hips, how close together or far apart the breasts are, straight or convex profiles, etc… It’s important to inform your surgeon about any preferences.

What is the shape of the upper pole of the breasts? Some women like a very natural look where from the profile, the pole of the breast is very straight. Some prefer a convex or bulging look.

Measurements like circumference of the chest wall, and the physical characteristics of the breast tissue play a big role in your options. For example, a woman in her 20s who has never had children will generally have tighter tissues, thus less room to put an implant. On the other hand, middle-age woman that has had several children regularly generally have looser tissues which allows for more implant options.

Breast Implant Options

Saline Implants

Saline implants are filled with a sterilized salt water solution. Saline breast implants also require a smaller incision than silicone implants do, and they are a good choice when it comes to correcting size discrepancies. Once properly placed they provide a very life-like look and feel. They are also filled with a completely harmless sterile saline solution.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants look and feel more natural than saline implants do. Properly placed they can be very soft to the touch and often virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. There have also been new developments in Silicone technology which has been proven to nearly eliminate risk. Contact our office today to learn more.

Modern breast augmentation surgery no longer requires the need for an extended time of recovery. The key to rapid recovery is the quick return of activity specifically early range of motion. Within 24 to 48 hrs. many women can return to their daily living, short of strenuous exercises and have no need of pain medication. Within about a week you can get back into your regular exercise program and within several weeks you can get back into strenuous upper body or chest muscle type exercises.

In regards to work, it depends on what kind of job you do. If it’s a sit-down type job then you should be back within days, if it’s a more strenuous factory or construction job with a lot of strenuous activity of the arms it may take you 7 to 10 days before you feel comfortable going back to do your regular job. For today’s average patient who has breast augmentation, they can be back to work within days ,and most of their activities within a day or two.
