Pairing Skin Surgery with Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, is a game-changer for people dealing with obesity. This method can really help folks shed those extra pounds by making changes to the digestive system, resulting in better overall health and an improved quality of life. Although bariatric surgery has its perks, it can leave you with some extra skin that might bug you and affect how you look. Skin surgery, or body contouring surgery as it’s sometimes called, can really make a difference in improving the appearance of your body after significant weight loss.

It can be really discouraging for people who have put in a lot of effort to lose weight and get healthier to deal with extra skin. Having too much skin can be quite uncomfortable, messing up your clothing options, and even leading to hygiene problems. Skin surgery tackles these concerns by getting rid of the extra skin and making the remaining skin tighter, resulting in a smoother and more toned look.

Skin Surgery Options

After bariatric surgery, skin surgery can include different procedures based on what you want and how you want to look. Some typical procedures include:

  • Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
  • Body Lift
  • Breast Lift (mastopexy)
  • Arm Lift (brachioplasty)
  • Thigh Lift

These surgeries focus on specific areas of the body where there’s extra skin, helping to reshape the body for a more balanced and proportionate look.

Benefits of Skin Surgery

Getting skin surgery with Dr. Racanelli after bariatric surgery has the major benefit of completely transforming your body contour and shape. Getting rid of excess skin not only makes you look better, but also helps you fully appreciate and enjoy your weight loss success. Besides enhancing one’s appearance, skin surgery can also enhance comfort and functionality. Having too much skin can be a hassle, leading to chafing, rashes, and overall discomfort. By getting rid of the extra skin, people can find relief from these problems and have a more comfortable everyday life. They can also join in physical activities and workouts without worrying about the restrictions that come with excess skin.

When to get Skin Surgery After Bariatric Surgery

Getting skin surgery after bariatric surgery is a significant endeavor and should be considered carefully. It’s a good idea to give your body some time to settle after bariatric surgery before opting for skin surgery. Usually, it’s recommended to wait around 18 months to two years after losing weight. This gives the body enough time to adapt and hormones to balance out, guaranteeing the optimal surgical result.

3 Facial Surgeries to Consider in 2024

The face is widely considered to be a significant factor in forming initial impressions, as it is typically the primary focal point when others observe you. While it is common for individuals to have concerns about their facial appearance, it is important to be aware of the available options for specific facial cosmetic surgery options.

The gap between your present facial appearance and your desired facial appearance can often be addressed by rectifying a specific facial feature, rather than necessitating a complete facial reconstruction. Dr. Racanelli performs specific facial cosmetic surgeries that can leave you with a more youthful and aesthetic appearance that you’ll be ready to show off in 2024.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is the most popular facial surgery on the market today. There are a few variations of rhinoplasty. A cosmetic rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure primarily performed for aesthetic purposes, focusing on enhancing the appearance of the nose. It is a process that alters the shape of the nose to improve its aesthetic appeal. Functional rhinoplasty refers to a surgical procedure aimed at enhancing the nasal breathing capabilities. Reconstructive rhinoplasty is carried out to address nasal deformities that occur because of nasal trauma or procedures involving the removal of cancer.

During a consultation with Dr. Racanelli, we will determine which type of rhinoplasty, or which combination of the discussed options, is right for you.

Forehead Lift

A forehead lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that repositions the forehead, raising the brow and reducing wrinkles in order to enhance the patient’s facial appearance with a more youthful and aesthetically pleasing outcome.

As individuals grow older, the skin decreases in its elasticity. The combined effect of sun damage can weaken the skin, while the gravitational force causes the brow to sag, leading to the development of wrinkles. You might have frown lines on your forehead, located between your eyebrows, which can make you seem overly serious or possibly even angry. Horizontal lines may appear on your forehead that show your aging. The outer region of your brow might undergo a sagging effect, which can lead to a sad or weary look due to the presence of drooping eyebrows.

A forehead lift can help put these problems to rest, turn back the years, and give you a more youthful look.

Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure that alters the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids. The goal is to improve the appearance of the eye area and address any vision issues caused by drooping eyelids.

The eyes often tend to be the first facial features to show signs of aging, as the effects of gravity result in the downward displacement of skin and soft tissues. This results in the development of dermatochalasis, which shows in the form of excess skin and baggy under-eyes.

An eye lift addresses these concerns by removing excess skin and fat, rejuvenating the eyes, and restoring a more youthful appearance.

Choosing the Right Plastic Surgeon

Choosing a plastic surgeon is a vital step in your cosmetic surgery process. If you want to accomplish your aesthetic goals, you will need to find a surgeon who is qualified, reputable, and capable of performing your required procedure.

Dr. Racanelli, who himself is board-certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery, knows that choosing the correct surgeon can truly determine the success of the operation. He prides himself on being voted by New Jersey Monthly Magazine as one of the top doctors in plastic and reconstructive surgery in the state of New Jersey.

Dr. Racanelli recommends going through the proper research to find the right surgeon for you, wherever you may be located. To do so, we’ve provided a few key factors to consider when choosing your plastic surgeon.

Credentials

The first and most important qualification for choosing a plastic surgeon is their credentials. If your surgeon doesn’t have a medical degree and board certification then they are obviously not qualified to perform cosmetic procedures.

Knowing that your surgeon has received adequate training is essential to having a good operation. Check their credentials online or ask for them directly from your potential surgeon. They should also hold accreditation from the American Board of Plastic Surgery in addition to their medical degree and board certification.

Facility Credentials

It is also exceedingly important that the facility where your potential surgeon operates is accredited as well. You need to make sure the equipment, operating rooms, and other key factors are all up to standard. There are too many horror stories out there of sub-par facilities that lead to infections and botched surgeries.

If the facility’s accreditations are not presented in a clear and concise manner on their website, you should get in touch with the establishment and inquire about their accreditation status.

Specialization

While many doctors such as Dr. Racanelli are experts in a variety of different plastic surgeries and will give you the best procedure possible, consider focusing your research on surgeons that specialize in the procedure you are interested in. For example, if you live in Miami and want to get a Brazilian Butt Lift, or BBL, look for Miami surgeons that specialize in that procedure.

Referrals and Recommendations

Talk to your primary doctor and see if they can provide you with a referral for a plastic surgeon who specializes in a procedure you are considering. Primary care offices often provide referrals to reputable surgeons that they know perform effective surgeries at accredited facilities.

Additionally, ask people you know that have had successful plastic surgeries where they have gone. If they have a surgeon that they love, schedule a consultation. Even if that surgeon does not specialize in your specific surgery, reputable plastic surgeons have substantial networks and surely will have someone they trust and recommend.

Consultations

Yes, that’s plural for a reason. After doing your research you will hopefully have a couple of surgeons that you are interested in. A good surgeon will offer free consultations, so take advantage and schedule consultations with multiple surgeons.

Even if all of the surgeons you are looking at meet your expectations for qualifications, it is a good idea to speak to a few in person and see which one you are comfortable with. Plastic surgery is an intimate process and you want to have someone that you can open up to about your goal and insecurities, and can trust to help you throughout the whole process.

Choosing Your Surgeon

Once you’ve done your due diligence and completed your consultations, pick the surgeon that is right for you. At this point you will have chosen a reputable and qualified surgeon and can begin the steps to meeting your cosmetic goals. Good luck!

9 Benefits of Rhinoplasty

Most people are aware that Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that helps to change the structure of the nose. Rhinoplasty can be cosmetic, reconstructive, or both, with a range of benefits for the patient. Here are 9 benefits patients can expect from rhinoplasty with Dr. Racanelli.

Improved Appearance

One of the most obvious benefits of rhinoplasty is the improved appearance of the nose. Many people undergo the procedure to change the size or shape of their nose, or to correct a bump or other imperfection. A skilled surgeon can adjust the proportions of the nose to create a more balanced, attractive facial appearance.

Improved Breathing

Breathing difficulties are another common problem that patients seek to address with rhinoplasty. Issues such as deviated septums or narrowed nasal passages can cause difficulty breathing through the nose, which can result in snoring, sleep apnea, and other problems. Rhinoplasty can be used to correct these issues and improve overall breathing function.

Boost in Self-Confidence

Many people are self-conscious about the size or shape of their nose. Rhinoplasty can be a powerful tool in boosting self-confidence and improving self-esteem. When patients feel confident and comfortable with their appearance, it can make a significant difference in their day-to-day life, both personally and professionally.

Correction of Birth Defects

Rhinoplasty can also be used to correct birth defects such as a cleft palate or other nasal abnormalities that can impact breathing or appearance. These corrective surgeries can make a significant difference in the lives of those born with these issues.

Correction of Trauma or Injury

Rhinoplasty is also commonly used to treat nasal injuries that have resulted from trauma, such as sports injuries, car accidents, or other causes. A skilled surgeon can repair a wide range of injuries, from fractures to deformities, restoring the appearance and function of the patient’s nose.

Improved Sleep and Breathing

As mentioned earlier, rhinoplasty can improve breathing for those with chronic breathing difficulties. This can lead to improvements in sleep quality, which in turn can impact overall health and wellness. Improved sleep can result in better cognitive function, increased energy levels, and improved mood.

Improved Facial Symmetry

The nose is a prominent feature on the face, and any imperfections can impact the overall symmetry and balance of the face. Rhinoplasty can address any issues and create a more balanced appearance. This can have a significant impact on a patient’s overall facial appearance and how they are perceived by others.

Increased Athletic Performance

While it may not be the most common benefit of rhinoplasty, it can be used to improve athletic performance for athletes who engage in activities that require sustained breathing, such as long-distance running or martial arts. Improved breathing allows these athletes to perform at a higher level and for longer periods of time.

Better Overall Health

In addition to the specific benefits listed above, rhinoplasty can have a positive impact on overall health and wellness. Many patients report improved mental and emotional health following the procedure, due to increased self-confidence and self-esteem. Additionally, correcting breathing difficulties can lead to fewer health problems down the road, such as sleep apnea or chronic sinus infections.

Rhinoplasty is a versatile procedure that can provide a wide range of benefits to patients. From improving appearance and self-confidence to correcting breathing issues and other health problems, it can have a significant positive impact on a patient’s life. As with any surgery, it’s important to choose a skilled and experienced surgeon such as Dr. Racanelli, and to carefully consider the risks and benefits before making a decision. However, for those who are good candidates for the procedure, the benefits of rhinoplasty can be life-changing.

Top 4 Plastic Surgeries to Consider This Fall

As summer draws to a close, many people may be thinking about undergoing cosmetic surgery procedures in order to improve their appearance and their self-esteem as the fall season approaches. The fall is often a good time for people to get plastic surgery, whether it’s to be ready for future festivities or because they simply want to make a clean slate.

While there are tons of different types of plastic surgeries you could consider, we’ve chosen our top 4 to share that could help you meet your aesthetic beauty goals as you head into the last portion of 2023.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, more commonly referred to as a “nose job,” is a common form of cosmetic surgery that can improve both the outward look and the proportions of the nose. It may be best to schedule this treatment in the fall for a person who wishes to address an issue with their appearance, rectify a difficulty with their breathing, or reconstruct their nose after experiencing damage. Patients will be able to undergo surgery and ensure proper healing and recuperation before engaging in social activities associated with the holiday season because the temperature will be colder and they will spend more time indoors.

Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, might be a great option for people who are interested in achieving a more youthful appearance and refreshing their overall appearance. During this treatment, excess skin, fat, and muscle are removed from the upper or lower eyelids. As a result, droopiness, puffiness, and bags under the eyes are significantly reduced. Eyelid surgery has a reasonably quick recovery period; therefore, scheduling the treatment in the fall can allow clients to recuperate in time to enjoy their rejuvenated appearance over the winter holidays.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is, and will likely continue to be, one of the most popular forms of cosmetic surgery. Breast augmentation in the fall might be a good choice for patients for a number of reasons, including those who want more volume, symmetry, or a more natural form for their breasts. Patients can have a more private healing period by wearing less garb and engaging in fewer activities outside while still obtaining the desired results in plenty of time for the holiday season by reducing their exposure to the elements. It is absolutely necessary to have a discussion about getting implants with an experienced plastic surgeon in order to identify the ideal implant size, kind, and surgical procedure for each specific person.

Facelift

A facelift is a thorough surgical procedure that tackles signs of aging in the face and neck, such as drooping skin, wrinkles, and jowls. The procedure is intended to restore a more youthful appearance to the patient. The fall is a great time for facelifts since the weather is typically cooler, which makes the recovery period more comfortable and reduces the amount of time spent in the sun. Patients can refresh their appearance and obtain a more youthful look in time for the holiday season, giving them the confidence boost they need to begin the new year in a positive frame of mind. It is essential to remember that while a facelift can produce results that endure for a long time, individual recovery times might vary, and it is necessary to give yourself plenty of time to recuperate before attending any key events or gatherings with other people.

Consultation

For the above surgeries, as well as any other procedures you may be considering, contact Dr. Racanelli for a consultation today. We can go over the procedure in its entirety, determine your candidacy, and start a plan to help you achieve your aesthetic goals this fall.

Give Your Summer a Lift

If you’re looking to give yourself a “lift” this summer, Dr. Racanelli has a few amazing lift procedures that can help improve your overall aesthetic look and get you ready to show off your aesthetic going into the second half of 2023.

Sagging skin all over the body is a normal consequence of aging, which makes us look older than we are and less confidence in ourselves. Thankfully, we are not doomed to perpetually struggle with these problems.

You can “lift” your spirits and restore your youthful appearance with one of the several procedures listed below offered by Dr. Racanelli.

Forehead Lift

Over time, your eyes, neck, and chin can begin to droop, sag, and wrinkle due to hormonal fluctuations, aging, sun damage, weight fluctuation, and smoking. These modifications are an inevitable consequence of muscle loss, lax muscle tissue, and sagging skin. Although you can’t stop the passage of time, a Rhytidectomy (or “face-lift”) can help you look years younger.

Injectable fillers and lasers can be used in conjunction with a forehead lift to totally remove the visible symptoms of aging or injury. During your personal consultation with Dr. Racanelli, he will identify the specifics of the operation that will yield the greatest results for your face.

Breast Lift

Mastopexy, more often known as a breast lift, restores a more youthful position and shape to the breasts. Breasts may lose firmness, fullness, and form as a normal part of the aging process. This is because of the inevitable loss of skin suppleness. Breast shape can also change as a result of physiological changes such as pregnancy, lactation, or rapid weight gain/loss.

When planning a breast lift, it’s important to consider the patient’s breast size, the areola shape and position, the degree of correction required, and the skin’s elasticity. After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Racanelli will decide on the best incision method and discuss your desired breast outcome with you. After the incision is made, your surgeon will reshape the breast tissue underneath.

The effect is instantaneous. Bandages and support bras will speed up the healing process so that you may flaunt your fresh, younger appearance once more.

Arm Lift

Inelastic skin on the upper arms can be corrected with a brachioplasty to give the arms their youthful appearance once again. This is a normal part of aging and is often the result of a significant weight reduction. The end outcome is an improvement in arm tone and proportion.

Again, the incision site will be chosen by your doctor depending on your specific circumstances and desired outcomes. The surgery involves using internal sutures to tighten and restructure the underlying supporting tissue. Excess skin is then removed before being restored over the arm. When significant fat threatens to distort the natural form of the arm, liposuction may be utilized as well.

Arm lifts have instant results, albeit with some temporary swelling and bruising. When they finally fade, a more defined and attractive shape emerges.

Consultation

If you feel as though you could benefit from one or more of the above lifts, contact Dr. Racanelli today, and let the best plastic surgeon in New Jersey schedule a treatment that will leave you the envy of your friends and family this year. Call today!

Preventative Botox – The New Trend in Facial Aesthetics

Preventative Botox: is it worth it?

Botox heads into 2023 as one of the world’s most popular forms of elective plastic surgery. Botox is extremely successful at combating fine lines, crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, and other signs of aging, which justifies its popularity and consistent usage.

In addition to its cosmetic benefits, Botox is also effective for teeth grinding, excessive perspiration, and migraines. Botox is a great treatment for plenty of different cosmetic and physical issues, especially considering that it is one of the most affordable cosmetic procedures.

Botox as a preventative measure is gaining popularity as younger individuals strive to delay their own aging.

Preventative Botox: what exactly are we talking about?

To comprehend preventative Botox, it’s important to have a working knowledge of what Botox is in general.  Botox is a neurotoxin that, when administered in the proper quantities, is an effective anti-aging treatment for wrinkles, fine lines, and crow’s feet. The treatment should only be conducted by a specialist, as improper dosages can result in severe health complications.

Preventive Botox refers to the use of Botox treatments to prevent the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Here, Dr. Racanelli will inject targeted muscles whose use causes wrinkles. Injection locations may include areas around the mouth, eyes, and forehead, among others. By immobilizing and delaying the use of the key muscles, you can effectively prevent the appearance of wrinkles.

Once deep lines appear, it is quite difficult to find a solution that effectively reduces their appearance. But, by utilizing Botox treatments preventatively, deep lines take far longer to appear and can be delayed by years, if not decades!

Preventative Botox: Successful Treatment

Scheduling periodic preventative Botox treatments with Dr. Racanelli keeps the muscles weak and less capable of producing fine lines and wrinkles, which is one of the main benefits of preventative Botox. Thus, you will require less Botox as you age. In fact, the results of each treatment will likely last longer each time before you need to return for a touch-up.

It is exceedingly important that you utilize a licensed and trustworthy specialist. Too much Botox can occasionally result in an aged appearance. Overuse can lead to muscular atrophy, and you will no longer achieve the desired effect. But, with Dr. Racanelli, you can rest assured that this does not occur. Instead, you can expect consistent, long-lasting results that leave our patients, as well as their loved ones, in awe.

Preventative Botox: Establishing Candidacy

The initial step in assessing preventative Botox candidacy with Dr. Racanelli is to schedule a consultation. By engaging in conversation with a possible patient and observing their facial expressions and habits, we can often assess whether or not you are a suitable fit for the procedure. Excessive eyebrow motions, furrowing of the brow, or consistent frowning may be an indicator of impending fine lines and wrinkles.

Age is the most crucial factor when considering Botox suitability for prevention. Botox is allowed for all adults aged 18 and older, but approval does not imply that it is absolutely necessary. Seeing your face is the most effective way to evaluate if preventative Botox is a viable treatment choice. As little, fine lines begin to form, you are likely ready for preventative Botox.

2023 Cosmetic Trends

As we head into the heart of 2023, we like to look at trending cosmetic surgery procedures that will be at the forefront of helping our patients achieve their aesthetic goals this year. More people are choosing plastic surgery now than ever, as there is both an increase in the variety of cosmetic procedures available, and a continued decrease in the unfair stigma that had plagued plastic surgery for years.

Through conversations with other doctors and a visibility of increased trends in general body goals, we’ve determined a handful of cosmetic procedures that may emerge as the most popular procedures of 2023.

Breast Augmentation and Reduction

While the goals seem to be polar opposites, we will put breast augmentation and reduction in the same trending category. This isn’t a new trend, but a continuation of a trend that seemingly may never die out. A more aesthetic look to the breasts is what is generally desired here, with goal keywords such as “full” or “sporty” often thrown around.

Large breasts tend to be perceived as less youthful, so older women are commonly opting for reductions that restore a younger look to their breasts. On the flip side, younger women with smaller breasts aren’t trying to go all out to the D or DD range anymore, but seemingly are happy with a full B or C, giving an athletic look that many crave.

Abdominoplasty

There has never been a stronger push for an athletic and fit physique. Trimming of that last bit of stomach fat has proven to be exceedingly difficult even with proper exercise and dieting. Abdominoplasty is a great way to remove excess skin and fat, tighten the abdominal wall, and produce an overall thinner and firmer abdomen that you can show off to your family and friends.

The “Dr. Racanelli Difference” for abdominoplasty is the inclusion of liposuction of the love handles area. This is done at no extra charge whatsoever and truly makes a difference for an aesthetic midsection. The liposuction contours the torso to a desirable shape that is sure to meet your body goals for 2023.

Fillers

Injectable fillers have been trending up for a few years now, ever since celebrities like the Kardashians put them at the forefront of cosmetic procedures. Dr. Racanelli is an expert when it comes to not only performing filler treatments, but recommending which fillers are right for you.

Fillers involving hyaluronic acid, found in popular injectables such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero, have been used by over 15 million patients since their inception. Hyaluronic acid is used to fill in wrinkles that are mild to moderate in severity. It works by absorbing water and plumping the tissue in depressed or empty places. The end effect is a more youthful and vibrant face. It works wonders on mild wrinkles from your nose to your mouth, as well as lines around your lips. It’s also a popular way to plump up the area around the eyes.

Preventative Botox

Botox is widely recognized as one of the most popular kinds of cosmetic therapy available today. This honor is well-deserved, as Botox is an excellent treatment for wrinkles, fine lines, crow’s feet, and other symptoms of aging. The concept of preventative Botox is one of the most common reasons why younger and younger generations are receiving Botox operations. This helps to slow down the aging process before it takes hold of a person.

Botox treatments are used to prevent signs of aging from forming. Your doctor will inject certain muscles that cause wrinkles over time, such as those that produce lines around the lips while smiling or frowning, muscles on the forehead that cause lines and wrinkles, and anything else that requires attention. By immobilizing these muscles, you essentially slow down aging in the face, making this an extremely popular and trending procedure moving into 2023.

4 Key Differences Between Abdominoplasty and Liposuction

While both abdominoplasty and liposuction are used to improve the aesthetics of the stomach area, there are some major differences between the two surgical procedures. Below are four key areas where differences occur.

1. Procedure

The procedures for the two surgeries are very different. Liposuction uses a thin tube, also known as a cannula, to move beneath your skin and loosen excess tissue. This is followed by the utilization of a medical suction device to remove the fat cells that have been dislodged with the cannula.

For abdominoplasty, an incision is made that exposes the muscle. Your doctor will then tighten the muscles by pulling them closer together and stitching them into a position that leads to a more firm and toned look. Excess skin is then trimmed away and the skin is tightened and smoothed by being pulled downward. Excess fat is also removed if necessary.

2a. Short Term Results

The most important difference when it comes to comparing liposuction and abdominoplasty are the results. With either procedure, you can expect fantastic results with Dr. Racanelli. However, those results will not be the same due to the nature of the two treatments.

Liposuction results entail the removal of fat from troubled regions in order to reveal a leaner physique. Abdominoplasty removes excess fat in a similar fashion, but also removes excess skin and strengthens and tones the abdominal wall. This result is more than just fat loss, but a true reshaping of the stomach to reach a desired aesthetic goal.

2b. Long Term Results

Both abdominoplasty and liposuction are considered “permanent” solutions. Liposuction is permanent because the fat cells that are removed during the procedure cannot come back. However, your lifestyle moving forward will determine the long-term results, because fat cells can always be reintroduced through poor diet and lack of exercise. While fat cells may be redistributed slightly differently than they were before, they can still negate your previous liposuction procedure.

Abdominoplasty is similar. It is a permanent solution, but your lifestyle moving forward can potentially have adverse effects. With abdominoplasty, it is more than just regaining fat, as you can damage and stretch the abdominal wall and skin due to significant weight gain. Pregnancy can affect this too, so it is probably wise to hold off on an abdominoplasty if you plan on becoming pregnant in the future.

3. Recovery

Liposuction recovery is dependent on how many areas are being treated. Most individuals can return to a typical “white-collar” job in a few days. However, if your job requires substantial movement or significant lifting, you may need to wait a couple weeks.

Abdominoplasty is significantly more taxing on the body, and requires a more strict recovery. You will be given a compression garment that must be worn for up to 6 weeks. During this time, you will be limited in your movement and cannot partake in substantial exercise or lifting.

4. Candidacy

A good liposuction candidate will have pockets of excess fat that seem to resist exercise and diet. However, it is generally important to be within 25-30 pounds of your ideal weight. This procedure is designed for fat removal, not overall weight loss. Too much liposuction would lead to excess skin and require additional procedures.

For abdominoplasty, an ideal candidate would have a body mass index of 30 or less and not actively trying to lose overall weight. This candidate would also not have heart conditions or plans to become pregnant in the future. While there are no actual pregnancy risks (aka nothing that would harm the fetus), the excess weight gain from pregnancy would pose issues for the newly constructed abdomen. Your abdomen could tear, which would then require additional surgery.
